Oklahoma is a state in the United States of America. It lies roughly in the middle of the United States and is surrounded by six other states: Texas in the south, New Mexico in the west, Kansas and Colorado in the north and Arkansas and Missouri in the east. The name of the state comes from the language of local Native Americans, the Choctaw. In English it means roughly "Land of the red man". Oklahoma has a population of approximately 3.8 million. The capital Oklahoma City is also the largest city in the state.

Oklahoma's landscape is mainly flat with only a few hills. Most mountains in the state are no higher than 2.600 feet. Oklahoma's climate is temperate with a lot of snow in winter. Parts of Oklahoma are in the so-called "Tornado Alley", where there are many tornadoes.

Oklahoma has long been a reservation for Native Americans. Around 1890 the government released parts of the area for settlement. Numerous settlers rushed into the area to claim land. This is called the "Oklahoma Land Run". Oklahoma City was built almost overnight. Later oil was found in Oklahoma.
